Security Forces Strike Deep Into ESN's Infrastructure: Rocket Launchers Seized, WAEC Kidnap Plot Foiled, and the Hidden Piggery Arsenal Dismantled

2026-06-12
Three Operations, 48 Hours, and a Foiled Atrocity

Between Tuesday 9 June and Wednesday 11 June 2026, the Nigerian Army and the Department of State Services conducted three separate but interconnected intelligence-led operations in Enugu State that have dismantled a significant portion of what security officials are describing as the Eastern Security Network's operational armoury infrastructure in the South-East geopolitical zone.

The first operation uncovered a concealed weapons cache inside a piggery in the Garki area of Enugu South Local Government Area. The second, carried out the following day in the Agbani axis of Enugu State, raided a second ESN armoury and recovered additional military-grade weapons. And the third — perhaps the most chilling in terms of the harm it prevented — was the intelligence-driven pre-emption of a planned mass abduction of students sitting the West African Senior School Certificate Examination across schools in Enugu, Anambra, and Imo states.

The Department of State Services and troops of the Nigerian Army on Wednesday foiled a major attempt by members of the outlawed Eastern Security Network to kidnap scores of students writing the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination in some South-East states. The targeted schools for the abductions were located in Enugu, Anambra and Imo states.

That the ESN allegedly planned to execute this mass abduction during examination season — targeting thousands of vulnerable young Nigerians at their most exposed, sitting in examination halls under controlled conditions without freedom of movement — represents a level of deliberate cruelty in target selection that security officials, parents, and civil society have responded to with uniform outrage.

Intelligence revealed that ESN members planned to launch the attacks while wearing National Youth Service Corps uniforms.

The choice of disguise is as significant as the target selection. NYSC uniforms — the khaki and green combination worn by corps members who are themselves a trusted presence in Nigerian schools and communities — would have allowed ESN members to approach examination venues without triggering immediate alarm. They were planning to walk past school security, parents, and examination officials in the attire of a corps that Nigerians associate with service, youth, and national development, and then execute mass kidnappings of children.

Also recovered was one smoke grenade launcher, two teargas canisters, 10 NYSC trousers, eight NYSC T-shirts and four NYSC lanyards.

The NYSC uniforms and identity accessories recovered alongside the weapons are not incidental. They are the operational wardrobe of the planned atrocity. Their seizure — alongside the firearms that were to accompany them into examination halls — removed both the weapons and the disguise from circulation before either could be used.

The Piggery Operation: How a Livestock Facility Became a War Chest

On June 9, 2026, security operatives conducted a targeted follow-up operation in Gariki, Enugu South Local Government Area, where they uncovered a concealed arms cache.

Troops of the 82 Division Garrison operating under Sector 1 of Operation UDO KA, in collaboration with operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, Enugu State Command, have uncovered a suspected arms cache belonging to the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network, ESN, in Enugu State. The operation followed credible intelligence obtained from arrested suspects linked to the groups.

A piggery — a livestock facility, a place of agricultural activity, chosen for the specific concealment advantage that its smell, noise, and the general unsuspiciousness of pigs provides. The logic of concealment is not difficult to understand: a piggery occupies legitimate commercial space, generates legitimate economic activity, and provides a reason for vehicles, personnel, and supplies to come and go without attracting the surveillance that more obviously suspicious premises would invite. Weapons stored beneath or alongside livestock are weapons that routine observation would not identify.

A large cache of weapons and ammunition, including General Purpose Machine Guns, an RPG-7 launcher tube, AK-47 rifles, hand grenades, a tear-gas gun with cartridges, AK-47 magazines, 270 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition and 478 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition were recovered in the process.

Each item on that weapons list carries its own operational significance. General Purpose Machine Guns — GPMGs — are belt-fed automatic weapons capable of sustained fire that are standard military equipment in most armed forces. Their presence in a piggery in the outskirts of Enugu State is not the footprint of a criminal enterprise. It is the footprint of a guerrilla force attempting to acquire the material basis for sustained armed operations. The RPG-7 launcher tube — the delivery system for rocket-propelled grenades capable of destroying armoured vehicles and penetrating fortified positions — is weapon of a different order entirely from the pistols and shotguns associated with ordinary criminal activity. The 748 rounds of combined 7.62mm ammunition — split between NATO-standard and special specifications — represent a significant logistics investment.

The Garki Armoury: The Tuesday Raid

The operation in the Garki area of Enugu, conducted on Tuesday 9 June, targeted what security officials described as a dedicated ESN armoury — not merely a hiding place for a weapon or two, but a structured storage facility for military-grade equipment.

A rocket launcher, two rocket-propelled grenade warheads, three RPG chargers and three AK-47 rifles were among the arms recovered by the security team. Also recovered by the team were six AK-47 magazines, two handheld grenades, one teargas gun, a baton and two teargas canisters, 270 rounds of NATO 7.62x39mm ammunition, 478 rounds of 7.62x39mm special ammunition, a bandolier and a baton.

The complete weapon system recovered from the Garki armoury is worth noting in its totality. A rocket launcher with two complete RPG warheads and three chargers is a functional, operational anti-armour and anti-fortification system. Combined with three AK-47 rifles, six magazines, and 748 rounds of mixed 7.62mm ammunition, what was recovered in Garki represents the firepower necessary for a coordinated attack on a hardened position — a military barracks, a police station, a government facility — or for an ambush of convoy or patrol. This is not a criminal gang's stockpile. It is a military unit's operational kit.

The Agbani Raid: The Wednesday Interception

The second armoury operation — in the Agbani axis of Enugu State on Wednesday — was directly connected to the foiled WAEC kidnapping plot.

Acting on credible intelligence from the DSS, operatives of the secret police and soldiers raided an ESN armoury in the Agbani axis of Enugu state. The raid led to the recovery of a cache of high-calibre arms, including eight AK-47 rifles, 12 AK-47 magazines and 323 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

Several members of the organisation were reportedly arrested.

The Agbani operation's timing — the same day as the WAEC abduction plot was foiled — suggests either a sequential intelligence operation in which the Tuesday Garki raid produced information that led to the Wednesday Agbani raid and the prevention of the WAEC attack, or parallel operations driven by the same intelligence picture that was simultaneously pointing at the armoury locations and the planned atrocity. The DSS's statement does not specify the precise sequence, but the convergence of both events within 24 hours indicates a significant intelligence breakthrough that allowed security forces to act on multiple threat vectors simultaneously.

Who Are IPOB and ESN: The Groups at the Centre of the Operations

Understanding the significance of these operations requires understanding the organisations whose infrastructure has been disrupted.

The Indigenous People of Biafra is a separatist organisation whose stated objective is the creation of an independent Biafran state encompassing the South-East geopolitical zone and parts of adjacent regions. Its spiritual and political leader, Nnamdi Kanu, was arrested in 2021 and has been in detention — subsequently under house arrest pending the resolution of his legal proceedings — while his appeal against conviction works through the courts. IPOB conducts advocacy activities, enforces the weekly sit-at-home compliance that has paralysed economic activity across South-East states for much of the past four years, and maintains what it presents as a non-violent political movement.

The Eastern Security Network is IPOB's armed wing — a structure that IPOB has sometimes acknowledged and sometimes distanced itself from depending on operational circumstances. The ESN was established in December 2020, ostensibly to protect Igbo communities from attacks by Fulani herdsmen. Security officials have consistently characterised it as a terrorist armed group responsible for attacks on police stations, military facilities, government offices, and civilians across the South-East, including the killings of police officers and soldiers that have made parts of the region genuinely unsafe.

The federal government proscribed IPOB as a terrorist organisation in September 2017. The Supreme Court of Nigeria ordered Kanu's release on bail in October 2023, with legal proceedings continuing thereafter. The ESN has never been a separate legal entity — it operates as IPOB's armed component under the same proscription order. The weapons recovered in this week's operations, attributed to IPOB and ESN, are the material evidence of that armed wing's ongoing operational capacity.

Operation UDO KA and Operation Eastern Sanity II: The Security Framework

The operation was carried out as part of ongoing efforts to sustain peace and security in the South-East under Operation EASTERN SANITY II.

Operation Udo Ka — meaning "Let There Be Peace" in Igbo — is the Nigerian Army's current operational framework in the South-East. It superseded earlier operations including Operation Python Dance and Operation Crocodile Smile that had previously framed military activity in the region. The naming in Igbo rather than in English or Hausa reflects a deliberate effort by military commanders to frame the operation within the cultural and linguistic identity of the region rather than as an external imposition.

Operation Eastern Sanity II is the intelligence-and-clearance sub-operation under the broader Udo Ka umbrella, focused specifically on identifying and dismantling the infrastructure — weapons caches, command nodes, logistics chains — that armed groups in the region use to sustain their operations. The June 9-11 raids represent the most publicly visible results of Eastern Sanity II to date, and their announcement through multiple military and intelligence channels suggests that they are being deliberately publicised as a demonstration of operational capability and as a deterrent message to other ESN units that may believe their armouries are concealed.

The NYSC Uniform Discovery: A Deliberate Provocation of National Symbols

The recovery of ten NYSC trousers, eight NYSC T-shirts, and four NYSC lanyards alongside the weapons cache in the Agbani raid warrants specific attention beyond the raw weapon count.

The National Youth Service Corps is one of Nigeria's most valued post-colonial institutions — a year of mandatory service that brings graduates from universities and polytechnics across the country to serve in states other than their own, building national cohesion through shared experience and community service. Corps members in their iconic khaki and green uniforms are a familiar and trusted presence in schools, hospitals, courts, and government offices across the country, including in the very schools where WAEC examinations are being conducted.

The ESN's plan to use NYSC uniforms as a penetration disguise was not merely a tactical decision. It was a deliberate exploitation of the trust and goodwill that the NYSC brand carries among the Nigerian public. It would have allowed ESN operatives to approach examination venues presenting as figures of reassurance — young Nigerians giving back to their country — while carrying weapons hidden beneath or near that uniform. The contamination of that symbol through its planned use in a kidnapping operation would have been a lasting reputational damage to an institution that Nigeria needs intact.

The security forces' recovery of those uniforms — before they were worn, before the operation proceeded — preserved both the immediate safety of the students and the integrity of the NYSC brand that would have been associated with the atrocity.

The Connection to Previous Kidnappings: Arms Couriers Linked to Niger State

The recoveries came barely a week after DSS operatives arrested five suspected arms couriers linked to gunmen who abducted students and staff of St. Mary's Catholic School in Papiri Village, Niger State, on November 21, 2025.

The explicit connection drawn between the June 2026 ESN armoury raids and the arms couriers linked to the November 2025 St. Mary's Catholic School kidnapping in Niger State is the intelligence thread that gives these operations their full context. The kidnapping of school children and staff is not a new operational method in the Nigerian security landscape — the mass abduction of students at the Government Girls Secondary School Chibok in 2014 established the horrific template that multiple armed groups across Nigeria have attempted to replicate.

The DSS's disclosure that the arms couriers arrested a week before the Enugu raids were connected to the St. Mary's kidnapping, and that the Enugu raids themselves disrupted a planned mass abduction of WAEC candidates, suggests that the intelligence picture assembled from multiple arrests and recovered materials is painting a consistent picture of organised, coordinated armed activity targeting vulnerable civilian populations at moments of institutional concentration — schools during examinations, churches during services, markets during peak hours.

The Public Statement: Lieutenant Colonel Ayeni's Message

The military reaffirmed the commitment of Operation UDO KA to continued offensive operations against criminal elements threatening public safety and national security, while urging members of the public to support ongoing security efforts by providing timely and credible intelligence to relevant agencies. WBIW

The public appeal for community intelligence cooperation is a consistent feature of military and DSS communications around successful operations, and it is worth taking seriously. The weapons cache in the piggery in Garki was not discovered by aerial surveillance or satellite imagery. It was discovered because the operation followed credible intelligence obtained from arrested suspects linked to the groups. The chain of intelligence that led to the piggery, to the Agbani armoury, and to the WAEC kidnapping plot began with human sources — people who knew what was happening, where, and when, and who provided that information to security agencies.

The protection of civilians from the threat posed by armed groups in the South-East depends on the quality and volume of intelligence that security agencies can develop, and that intelligence depends in significant measure on the willingness of community members to share information. The June 2026 operations demonstrate what that intelligence-to-action pipeline can produce when it functions correctly.

The Weapons in Full: A Stocktaking

Drawing together the complete inventory of weapons and equipment recovered across the three June 2026 Enugu operations provides a picture of the operational capacity that has been removed from circulation.

From the Garki area Tuesday operation: a rocket launcher, two RPG warheads, three RPG chargers, three AK-47 rifles, six AK-47 magazines, two handheld grenades, one teargas gun, two teargas canisters, 270 rounds of NATO 7.62x39mm ammunition, 478 rounds of 7.62x39mm special ammunition, one bandolier, and one baton.

From the Agbani axis Wednesday operation: eight AK-47 rifles, 12 AK-47 magazines, 323 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, one smoke grenade launcher, two teargas canisters, and the ten NYSC trousers, eight NYSC T-shirts, and four NYSC lanyards that were the planned disguise for the WAEC abductions.

From the piggery operation conducted under the 82 Division Garrison's Sector 1 of Operation UDO KA: General Purpose Machine Guns, an RPG-7 launcher tube, AK-47 rifles, hand grenades, a teargas gun with cartridges, AK-47 magazines, 270 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, and 478 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition.

Across the three operations: multiple GPMGs, multiple complete RPG systems with warheads and chargers, more than eleven AK-47 rifles, thirty AK-47 magazines, at least four grenades, multiple teargas weapons, approximately 1,600 rounds of mixed 7.62mm ammunition, and the NYSC disguise kit for the planned examination hall abductions.

Every item on that inventory represents a weapon that will not be fired at a Nigerian soldier, a policeman, a government official, a student sitting an examination, or a civilian going about their daily life. That is the concrete, quantifiable outcome of the operations — not merely intelligence gathered, not merely suspects identified, but weapons physically removed from armed men who intended to use them.
