FIFA World Cup 2026: Day Two Is Live — Canada Trails Bosnia, USA and Paraguay Still to Come

2026-06-12
The World Cup Has Arrived

The FIFA World Cup 2026 — the biggest in the tournament's history, expanded to 48 teams and spread across 16 cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico — is two days old and it is already delivering everything the world hoped it would. On Thursday 11 June, the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City shook to its foundations as co-hosts Mexico made history by opening the tournament with a 2-0 victory over South Africa, with Al Qadsiah forward Julián Quiñones scoring the first goal of the 2026 World Cup. In Guadalajara on the same night, South Korea produced a comeback win, beating the Czech Republic 2-1 with substitute Oh Hyeon-Gyu heading home the decisive goal. The opening ceremony featured Shakira and Burna Boy performing the World Cup anthem — one of the great viral moments of the tournament's opening hours.

Today, Friday 12 June 2026, Day Two is well underway — and for two of the three host nations, their campaigns have already begun or are about to.

Day One Results: Mexico Win, South Korea Come From Behind

Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026. South Korea won their opener 2-1 against Czechia in Guadalajara. South Korea got their World Cup campaign off to a winning start by beating the Czech Republic 2-1 after finally converting some of the many chances they created.

The Mexico win was the one the Azteca crowd — 87,000 inside the stadium, millions more in the streets outside and across the country — had come to see. A South Africa side that had conceded two red cards during the match was ultimately overrun by a Mexican team playing in front of the tournament's most emotionally charged atmosphere. Julián Quiñones had the honour of scoring the first goal of the 2026 World Cup when he gave El Tri the lead against South Africa on their way to a 2-0 victory in the opening game.

South Korea came from behind to beat Czechia. Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ladislav Krejcí gave the European side the lead, before Hwang In-Beom and Oh Hyeon-Gyu turned the match on its head to give South Korea a precious victory.

Son Heung-min's Koreans had dominated the first half but were unable to find the net. Substitute Oh Hyeon-Gyu scored the decisive goal in a Guadalajara stadium that was far from full.

Day Two, Game One — Canada vs Bosnia and Herzegovina: LIVE

Right now, at Toronto Stadium in Ontario, Canada are playing their first-ever FIFA World Cup match on home soil. It is not going according to plan.

An early lead goes to the guests as Jovo Lukić heads home the opening goal of the match off a Sead Kolašinac corner kick. Bosnia and Herzegovina lead Canada 1-0. The goal came from a set-piece — a corner from Sead Kolašinac, Jovo Lukić arriving to head past a Canadian goalkeeper who had no chance once the delivery was in.

Nearing the end of the first half, Canada remains dominant in possession, but Bosnia and Herzegovina remain ahead 1-0. Two Bosnia and Herzegovina players, Ermedin Demirović and Jovo Lukić, earn the first two cautions of the match as halftime approaches.

Canada have been the better team in terms of possession and territory — the numbers support them — but the final ball has been lacking. It is a familiar Canadian football problem: building patiently to the edge of the penalty area and then finding themselves unable to create genuine danger in the moments that matter. Canada continue to push for an equalizer before the half, but their end-product in the final third remains lacking. They have never won a 90-minute match after falling behind under Jesse Marsch.

The Toronto crowd, who had watched their team arrive in this tournament for the first time on home soil with enormous expectation, are feeling the weight of that statistic. Canada qualified for their first World Cup since 1986 by finishing second in CONCACAF qualifying — one of the great football revival stories of recent years. Playing at home in front of their own fans, trailing at halftime, they need something significant in the second half.

Group B also contains Qatar and Switzerland, with Canada's next match against Qatar in Vancouver on June 18.

Day Two, Game Two — USA vs Paraguay: Tonight in Los Angeles

Later today, the other co-hosts get their tournaments underway as Canada take on Bosnia and Herzegovina at BMO Field in Toronto, before Mauricio Pochettino's United States side host Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

The USA versus Paraguay match is the other headline fixture of Day Two. Mauricio Pochettino — the Argentine manager who led PSG and Tottenham Hotspur before taking the United States national team job — brings his side into a tournament where expectation is enormous and where the pressure of co-hosting has been building for years. ESPN has published analysis arguing the US is going to win the 2026 World Cup, citing 13 statistics in support. Whether that prediction proves accurate is one of the central narratives of the next six weeks.

Paraguay, in Group D alongside the USA, Australia, and Turkey, are a side with genuine quality. They qualified through CONMEBOL after finishing sixth in South America's qualification table, and their attacking football can trouble any defence. The SoFi Stadium in Inglewood — the venue that also hosts the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers — will be hosting a World Cup match for the first time, with a full house of fans that will include enormous Mexican-American and Latin American communities making their voices heard on behalf of Paraguay.

USA vs Paraguay kicks off this evening California time. The knockout stages will be held from Sunday 28 June, beginning with the round of 32.

The Tournament Structure: 48 Teams, 104 Matches, Three Countries

The initial stage is composed of 12 groups of four teams. Every team plays three matches within its group. The top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, advance to a new Round of 32. From there, the competition follows a traditional single-elimination knockout bracket, meaning the two teams that reach the final will have played a total of eight matches. The World Cup 2026 is jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament begins on Thursday June 11, 2026, with the opening match held at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The final match is scheduled for Sunday July 19, 2026, at the New York New Jersey Stadium — MetLife Stadium — in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Matches will be played across 16 stadiums in 16 cities: eleven in the United States — Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, San Francisco Bay Area, and Seattle — three in Mexico — Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Monterrey — and two in Canada — Toronto and Vancouver.

The expansion to 48 teams — up from 32 at every previous World Cup since 1998 — means that every confederation is more generously represented than ever before.

The 48 qualified nations are: from CONCACAF — Canada, Mexico, United States, Curaçao, Haiti, and Panama. From CONMEBOL — Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Uruguay. From UEFA — Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czechia, England, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Türkiye. From the AFC, nine teams including Australia, Iran, Japan, South Korea, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Uzbekistan. From Africa — Algeria, Cape Verde, Congo DR, Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, and Tunisia.

Africa's World Cup: Ten Nations, Enormous Expectation

Africa is sending ten teams to this World Cup — the largest African contingent in the tournament's history. For Nigerian football fans in particular, the absence of the Super Eagles from the 48-team field is a painful void. Nigeria failed to qualify after a campaign that promised more than it delivered, and for the first time in a tournament where Africa has its best-ever representation, the continent's most populous Black nation is watching from home.

The African nations who made it — Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Tunisia, South Africa, Congo DR, and Cape Verde — carry the weight of a continent's ambition. Morocco's extraordinary run to the semi-finals at Qatar 2022 established the template for African footballing credibility at the highest level, and the Super Eagles' absence means that the Atlas Lions and the Black Stars and the Teranga Lions carry additional symbolic weight for the broader West African football community.

Ghana are in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. Côte d'Ivoire meet Ecuador, Sweden, and Senegal in Group G. Morocco face Brazil, Haiti, and Scotland in Group C. Egypt are in Group H with Belgium, Austria, and Saudi Arabia. And South Africa, despite their 2-0 opening defeat to Mexico, have the honour of having been on the pitch for the tournament's very first goal.

Looking Ahead: A Full Weekend of Football

The schedule through the weekend brings more of the world's biggest teams into action. Tomorrow and Sunday see Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands all opening their campaigns — the full weight of the world's most powerful footballing nations descending on venues across three countries simultaneously.

The groups most likely to define the tournament's story are already taking shape. Group A — Mexico, South Korea, Czechia, and South Africa — sees Mexico and South Korea already level on three points after one match each, turning what should have been the group's less dramatic opener into an immediate top-of-the-table clash when they meet in Zapopan on June 18.

The round of 32 begins on June 28. The final is on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Between now and then, 48 nations, 104 matches, 16 cities, and three host countries will stage the greatest football tournament the world has seen.

It started in Mexico City with Shakira, Burna Boy, and a Julián Quiñones header. Today it moves to Toronto and Los Angeles. This weekend it moves everywhere.

The World Cup is here.
