Smart Money Talks: How the CBN and OPay Are Equipping Nigeria's Youth for the Financial Future at Global Money Week 2026

2026-05-07

In a country where millions of young people are stepping into an increasingly complex and digital financial world, the Central Bank of Nigeria has drawn a clear line in the sand: financial literacy is no longer a luxury — it is a survival skill. This message rang loud and clear at the 2026 edition of Global Money Week, held in Abuja in late April 2026, where the CBN joined forces with fintech giant OPay to deliver one of the most impactful financial education events in recent memory.

What Is Global Money Week?

Global Money Week is a worldwide awareness initiative designed to equip young people with the knowledge and skills needed to make sound financial decisions. The initiative ensures long-term economic stability by preparing the next generation for an increasingly digital and interconnected financial ecosystem. It is observed annually across dozens of countries, with each nation hosting locally relevant events tailored to the needs of their young populations.

The 2026 Edition: "Smart Money Talks"

The Global Money Week 2026 Financial Literacy Fair and Exhibition was held on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 at CBN's headquarters in Abuja. The event was themed "Smart Money Talks" and brought together students from secondary schools across the Federal Capital Territory, including Doveland International School, Living Fountain International School, Government Day Secondary School Wuse, and Government Science School Maitama, among others.

The theme "Smart Money Talks" was chosen to promote open dialogue about finances as a pathway to better decision-making, with the message that asking questions, sharing ideas, and learning from others are essential steps towards building a secure financial future.

CBN's Urgent Call to Nigeria's Students

The keynote address at the event set a powerful tone. The Director of Consumer Protection and Financial Inclusion Department at the CBN, Mrs. Aisha Isa Olatinwo, said young people must learn how to make wise financial decisions early in life, stating that "in today's rapidly evolving financial landscape, financial literacy is no longer optional; it is essential."

She went further to connect individual financial knowledge to national outcomes. Olatinwo noted that equipping young people with the knowledge to make informed financial decisions would not only benefit individuals but also strengthen families and support national economic growth.

She encouraged students to engage in open discussions about money, stressing that such conversations help to dispel misconceptions, build confidence, and prepare them for a more secure financial future. She also disclosed that the campaign would not be limited to students alone but would extend to different segments of society, with efforts underway to take financial education to parents, traders, and communities across the country.

CBN's Tools for Financial Education: Sabi Money and Beyond

The CBN did not just issue calls to action — it came with practical tools. The Director disclosed that the CBN has introduced several initiatives to improve public understanding of financial management. Programmes such as the Bank Consumer Education Series and the "Sabi Money" e-learning platform are designed to help Nigerians, especially young people, gain practical knowledge about money and even teach others.

The Head of Consumer Education and Evaluation Division, Mr. Amuwa Nelson, explained that this year's financial literacy fair was designed to provide hands-on experience in budgeting, saving, and spending wisely, while also exposing participants to financial opportunities available to them. He added that participants would have the opportunity to interact directly with financial institutions, explore youth-focused financial products, and gain insights that would shape their financial choices both now and in the years ahead.

OPay Steps In: Fintech Meets Financial Literacy

One of the most significant developments of this year's event was the formal partnership between the CBN and OPay. OPay, a leading fintech company in Nigeria, partnered with the CBN at the event to promote financial awareness and responsible money management among young Nigerians. TechRadar

Speaking at the event, Dr. Aisha Isa-Olatinwo highlighted financial literacy as a cornerstone of national development, noting that in today's rapidly evolving financial landscape, financial literacy is no longer optional but essential for individuals, families, and the broader economy.

OPay's Chief Compliance Officer, Chukwudinma Okafor, articulated the company's motivation for participating. "Our partnership with the Central Bank of Nigeria on Global Money Week reaffirms our strong alignment with regulatory priorities around consumer protection, financial literacy, and responsible financial services usage. At OPay, compliance goes beyond regulation; it is about building trust and ensuring that individuals, especially young people, are equipped with the right knowledge to engage safely and confidently in the financial system. Initiatives like this play a vital role in advancing financial inclusion and supporting the sustainable development of Nigeria's digital economy."

Paul Iwunwa, Senior Marketing Manager at OPay, also reaffirmed the company's commitment to advancing financial inclusion through early education initiatives, noting that OPay sees financial literacy as the foundation of true financial inclusion. By engaging students at this critical stage, OPay is not only helping to shape better money habits but also contributing to a more financially responsible and economically resilient future for Nigeria.

The Financial Literacy Fair and Exhibition featured engaging sessions that provided students with hands-on experience in money management and savings. Participants also had the opportunity to engage directly with OPay's interactive booth, gaining exposure to innovative financial products tailored to support their financial journey.

Why This Matters for Nigeria

Nigeria's financial inclusion journey is ongoing and urgent. With a large youth population — the majority of Nigeria's over 200 million people are under 35 — and a rapidly evolving digital economy, the stakes of financial illiteracy are high. Young Nigerians who lack basic knowledge about savings, budgeting, borrowing, and digital payments are more vulnerable to fraud, debt traps, and economic marginalisation.

The Global Money Week campaign in Nigeria forms part of broader efforts by the CBN to deepen financial literacy, strengthen consumer protection, and support long-term economic stability. The 2026 edition reflects the apex bank's commitment to equipping young people with financial knowledge and decision-making skills as the economy continues to evolve.

Amuwa Nelson urged participants to actively engage in the sessions and make use of available resources, adding that financial habits formed early in life shape future outcomes. It is a point that cannot be overstated — what a teenager learns about money today will determine the financial decisions they make as adults, employees, entrepreneurs, and parents tomorrow.

The Bigger Picture: A Nation Investing in Its Financial Future

The 2026 Global Money Week event in Abuja sends a powerful signal — that Nigeria's apex bank, working hand in hand with the private sector, is serious about closing the financial literacy gap from the ground up. By bringing students into the conversation early, giving them access to real financial institutions, and providing them with the digital tools they need through platforms like "Sabi Money" and OPay, the CBN is planting seeds that could yield an economically empowered generation.

As Nigeria continues to navigate the pressures of inflation, currency volatility, and economic restructuring, the most powerful investment it can make may well be the simplest one: teaching its young people how to manage money wisely.
