Father's Day 2026: The Full History of the Holiday and 80+ Messages to Copy and Send Right Now
Today, Sunday, June 21, 2026, is Father's Day in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Nigeria, India, and more than 50 other countries around the world. It falls on the longest day of the year — the June solstice, the official start of astronomical summer — making 2026's Father's Day the most daylight-filled one in the holiday's history. There is no better day to be a dad. And if you have been meaning to find the right words to send to your own father, your husband, your grandfather, your uncle, your stepfather, your father-in-law, or the man who raised you without the title — this is everything you need.
THE HISTORY: HOW A DAUGHTER'S LOVE BUILT A NATIONAL HOLIDAY
The story of Father's Day begins with a woman sitting in a church pew in Spokane, Washington, in the spring of 1909. Her name was Sonora Smart Dodd, and she was listening to a Mother's Day sermon. As the minister spoke, Sonora's thoughts drifted to her own father, a man whose story most people would not easily forget.
William Jackson Smart was a Civil War veteran — a man who had already lived through more hardship before middle age than most people see in a lifetime. When his wife died in childbirth, William was left alone on his eastern Washington farm to raise six children. The youngest was an infant. He did not remarry immediately. He did not send the children away. He planted the crops, cooked the meals, mended the clothes, told the bedtime stories, and raised all six children to adulthood on his own, in the rural eastern Washington of the late 19th century, with no running water, no electricity, and no social safety net beyond the labour of his own hands and the depth of his own love.
Sonora Smart Dodd was sitting in that Spokane church in 1909 thinking about her father when she concluded that what her father had done deserved to be honoured as formally and as nationally as what mothers were beginning to be honoured. Mother's Day had just been established, thanks to Anna Jarvis's campaigning, and the momentum behind it was unmistakable. Sonora wanted the same for fathers.
She began campaigning immediately, approaching the Spokane Ministerial Association, the YMCA, shopkeepers, and local government officials. She proposed June 5 as the date — her father's birthday. The ministers asked for more time to prepare their sermons on the, as one historian described it, unexplored subject of fathers. The date was moved to June 19, the third Sunday of the month. On that day in 1910, Spokane held what is universally recognised as the first Father's Day celebration in American history — and the world's. Roses were the chosen flower: red for living fathers, white for those who had died.
What followed was a six-decade campaign to make the holiday permanent at the national level. It turned out that getting Americans to celebrate fathers was harder than getting them to celebrate mothers. Many men in the early decades of the 20th century were openly sceptical of the holiday, regarding it as a sentimental commercial exercise designed to sell neckties and greeting cards. Congress repeatedly rejected proposals to enshrine Father's Day as a national holiday, worried — not without reason — about the commercialisation of public sentiment. President Woodrow Wilson symbolically acknowledged the day in 1916 by using a telegraph to unfurl a flag in Spokane from Washington DC. President Calvin Coolidge urged state governments to observe it in 1924. Still, no federal legislation followed.
The commercial resistance was not entirely wrong as a prediction. By the 1930s, Father's Day Council — a New York men's retailer group — had partnered with Sonora Smart Dodd herself to promote the holiday commercially. The holiday that began as a daughter's tribute to her widowed father had become tied up in department store promotions and necktie marketing campaigns, and many Americans remained ambivalent.
It was not until 1966 — 57 years after Sonora's first Spokane campaign — that President Lyndon Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation officially honouring fathers on the third Sunday in June. Six years later, in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed the legislation that permanently established Father's Day as a national holiday in the United States, anchored forever to the third Sunday of June. Sonora Smart Dodd, who lived to be 96, was still alive to see her idea become law.
In 2026, the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics project that Americans will spend a record $27.9 billion on Father's Day — more than any previous year. The holiday is now observed in more than 111 countries. Many countries share the third-Sunday-in-June date used in the US, UK, Canada, and Nigeria. Australia and New Zealand celebrate on the first Sunday of September. Spain, Portugal, and several other Catholic countries observe it on March 19, the Feast of St. Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus. Norway, Sweden, and Finland mark the holiday on the second Sunday of November.
HOW THE DATE IS CHOSEN
Father's Day in the United States and most countries observing it this week follows a simple floating rule: the third Sunday in June. Because June begins on a different day of the week each year, the third Sunday can fall anywhere between June 15 and June 21. In 2026, it falls on June 21 — the absolute latest it can possibly fall, and the day of the June solstice. The holiday's floating nature is why so many people search for the date each year. Unlike a birthday or anniversary anchored to a specific number, Father's Day moves slightly, and the only way to be sure is to count the Sundays.

Universal Closing Thoughts
However you say it today — in a card, a text, a WhatsApp voice note, a long phone call, a quiet moment at the kitchen table, or a prayer in a pew — the heart of Father's Day is the same as it was when Sonora Smart Dodd sat in that Spokane church in 1909: the recognition that fatherhood, in all its forms, is one of the most significant things a person can do. The quiet sacrifices. The steady presence. The love that shows up without being asked.
Tell your father today. Tell your father figure. Tell your husband. Tell your grandfather. Tell the men in your life who stepped in without being asked and never once made you feel like you owed them for it.
And if your father is gone, tell him anyway. Some of the most important conversations happen in the silence.
Happy Father's Day 2026.
