"It Was Out of My Control": Australian Charged With Murder After Thai Teenager's Body Found in a Suitcase Near Pattaya Railway Tracks

2026-06-28

A 17-year-old Thai girl is dead, and the Australian man accused of killing her recorded a message to her family from police custody before facing four separate criminal charges in a Pattaya courtroom. The case — which has shocked the Thai tourist city and drawn consular involvement from the Australian government — centres on a dispute over a few hundred baht, a struggle inside a rented condominium, and a 26-inch suitcase later found discarded near a railway line roughly four kilometres away.

What Happened

According to Thai police, CCTV footage shows Thanchanok Donhomlao — known to friends as "Nong Cake," and identified in some reports by the alias "Miss T" — meeting Simon Peter Carman, a 46-year-old Australian man from Ballarat, Victoria, on Jomtien Beach in Pattaya at around 3 AM on June 25, 2026. The footage shows the pair walking hand in hand into a condominium on Jomtien Second Road and entering Room 20 on the building's 15th floor. Thanchanok was not seen leaving the room alive.

Hours later, cameras captured Carman dragging a large black suitcase out of the condominium, loading it onto a red motorcycle, and riding toward a road running alongside the railway tracks near Soi Chaiyapruk 2. The alarm was first raised when the teenager's friends reported her missing on Friday afternoon; police traced her last known movements to the condominium and, after Carman was detained, he reportedly told investigators where the suitcase had been left. Officers recovered it later that night in a wooded area roughly 4.2 kilometres from the building. Inside was the body of a young woman, naked and curled up, covered with a thin cloth, with severe bruising across her body and face and bloodstains around her nose and mouth.

The Account Carman Gave Police

According to Thai police, Carman initially denied involvement when first detained but later gave a statement after being confronted with evidence, including visible scratch marks on his neck and arms that Police Colonel Anek Sarathongyu, head of Pattaya City Police Station, described as "consistent with a struggle." (Asked on camera about the marks, Carman reportedly blamed a spider.)

In his account to police, Carman said he had not previously known the teenager and that they had agreed on a payment of 1,000 baht — roughly AU$45 — for her time. Once inside the room, he said she told him she was menstruating and would not have sex with him, at which point he offered her 500 baht instead. He claims an argument followed, during which she grabbed a kitchen knife from the room and threatened him with it while demanding more money. He told police he restrained her by gripping her neck with one hand while grabbing her knife-wielding hand with the other, and that she then became still. He has maintained he did not intend to kill her and acted in self-defence. He has also admitted to placing her body in the suitcase and disposing of it near the railway tracks before returning to his room, packing his belongings, and travelling to Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Police have stressed publicly that Carman's account has not been accepted as fact. Colonel Sarathongyu said the victim "had no chance to speak" and described the self-defence claim as unsubstantiated.

The Arrest

Carman was intercepted at Suvarnabhumi Airport on Friday evening, June 26, shortly before he was due to board a Jetstar flight to Perth. An immigration watch notice had been issued at the request of Pattaya police, who were simultaneously seeking a court-approved arrest warrant. He was stopped at the outbound checkpoint and taken into custody by officers from the Immigration Bureau before being transferred to Pattaya police for questioning.

He has now been charged with four offences: murder, concealment of a body, moving or destroying a body, and taking a minor between the ages of 15 and 18 for an indecent purpose. He has denied the charges. He was remanded in custody by the Pattaya Provincial Court pending further investigation, including autopsy results from the Police General Hospital and continued forensic and CCTV analysis.

The Message to the Family

In a video recorded while in custody, and shared by reporters following his arrest, Carman addressed Thanchanok's family directly. "I feel bad for what happened to your daughter. It was out of my control. I know you'll be very sad, upset, same as me," he said.

The message has drawn intense criticism online, with many describing it as inadequate and self-serving given the nature of the charges against him and the visible scratch injuries that police say are consistent with the teenager having fought for her life.

The Victim

Thanchanok Donhomlao was 17 years old and from Kalasin province in northeastern Thailand. Friends who reported her missing told police she had met a foreign man at Jomtien Beach earlier that morning. Her death has prompted shock in Pattaya, a city that draws large numbers of foreign tourists and long-term expatriate residents, and has reignited public discussion in Thailand about the safety of young women who interact with foreign visitors in the country's tourist and nightlife economy.

What Happens Next

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed it is providing consular assistance to Carman but says it cannot comment further due to privacy obligations. The investigation remains active, with Thai police continuing to examine CCTV footage, forensic evidence from the condominium and the suitcase, and witness statements as the case moves through Thailand's legal system. Under Thai law, Carman remains a suspect — formally charged but not convicted — until a court determines guilt or innocence.
