Poco Lee Remanded in UK Prison, Due in London's Snaresbrook Crown Court on September 15

2026-08-25

One of Nigeria's most recognisable entertainment figures is currently being held on remand in a United Kingdom prison, following an alleged assault — with a plea hearing scheduled for September 15, 2026, at Snaresbrook Crown Court in east London. The confirmation came Monday from Benjamin Kuti, popularly known as the Oluomo of Derby, and founder of the Community of Nigerians in the United Kingdom — a community figure who says he regularly attends UK court proceedings to support Nigerians facing legal matters in the country.

Popular Nigerian dancer and hypeman Iweh Odinaka, better known as Poco Lee, has reportedly been remanded in the United Kingdom over an alleged sexual assault and is scheduled to appear before a London court on September 15, 2026.

The development marks a dramatic and deeply serious turn for one of Afrobeats' most celebrated hype figures — a man whose energy, footwork, and infectious stage presence has made him a fixture at the biggest events in Nigerian entertainment for nearly a decade.

What Is Known: The Facts as Confirmed

Kuti confirmed the development on Monday, saying Poco Lee is currently in a UK prison and is scheduled to appear before the Snaresbrook Crown Court on September 15, 2026, at exactly 10 am.

Kuti said: "I can confirm that the reports are true. Poco Lee is currently on remand in a UK prison. His next court date is scheduled for the second week of September, when he is expected to have a plea hearing."

According to Kuti, the entertainer's next appearance is expected to be a plea hearing, during which he would indicate whether he is guilty or not guilty of the allegation. A plea hearing is a standard procedural step in the UK Crown Court system — it is not a trial, and no verdict will be delivered on that date. It is the formal occasion on which a defendant, facing charges serious enough to be heard at Crown Court level, enters their plea for the record.

Kuti, who said he regularly attends court proceedings involving Nigerians in the UK, added that he would be present at the hearing to support Poco Lee.

What remains unclear at this stage is significant. The identity of the alleged complainant, the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault, and details of any formal charges were initially unclear. Neither the UK police nor a court had independently confirmed the arrest. The specific nature of the allegation — reported variously as assault and sexual assault across different Nigerian news outlets — has not been officially confirmed through UK police or court channels as of the time of writing. Nigerian media should be read with that caveat in mind: the confirmed facts are that Poco Lee is on remand, that a court date has been set, and that the case is before Snaresbrook Crown Court. The precise charge or charges are what the September 15 hearing will begin to formally establish.

What Is Not Known — and Why That Matters

Reports of Poco Lee's alleged detention in the UK began circulating online on August 19. For nearly a week, speculation circulated across Nigerian social media without authoritative confirmation, creating an environment in which the nature of the allegation was discussed extensively before any official source had spoken. Kuti's Monday confirmation established the court date and the fact of remand. It did not — and appropriately could not — speak to the merits of the allegation.

The UK criminal justice system operates on a clear presumption of innocence. A person on remand is being held pending their court appearance, not as a consequence of a finding of guilt. Remand — the detention of a defendant between arrest and trial — is ordered by a court when bail has been denied or not granted, and does not constitute any judgment on the underlying allegation. The September 15 plea hearing is the formal beginning of the Crown Court process. The trial, if Poco Lee enters a not-guilty plea, would be scheduled for a later date.

Kuti stressed that the legal process should be allowed to take its course, noting that Poco Lee remains innocent until proven guilty by a court. That framing — the Oluomo of Derby making the presumption of innocence explicit while confirming the detention — reflects the appropriate approach to a case in which the public knows little beyond the fact of the remand and the upcoming court date.

Who Is Poco Lee?

Iweh Odinaka — Poco Lee — is one of the most recognisable faces and personalities in the Afrobeats ecosystem. He rose to prominence as a hypeman and dancer whose energy and footwork established him as a genuine performance phenomenon, not merely a supporting act for the artists he performed alongside. His association with Wizkid, Zlatan Ibile, and other Afrobeats heavyweights placed him on some of the biggest stages in Nigerian and pan-African music, and his social media presence — particularly on Instagram and TikTok — gave him a personal audience that extended well beyond concert appearances.

His viral moment arrived with the "Poco Lee wahala" dance challenge in 2020, which circulated across African social media and introduced him to an audience beyond Nigeria's core music scene. He subsequently built on that visibility through consistent content creation, event appearances, and music collaborations that cemented him as a fully-fledged celebrity in his own right — not just an associate of other celebrities.

The circumstances that brought him to the United Kingdom at the time of the alleged incident have not been publicly confirmed. Nigerian entertainers travel frequently to the UK for shows, events, and personal visits, and Poco Lee's presence in London is not in itself unusual. What is unusual — and deeply serious — is what reportedly followed.

The Snaresbrook Crown Court: Context on the Venue

The fact that this case is before Snaresbrook Crown Court is itself informative about the seriousness with which the UK's Crown Prosecution Service is treating the matter. Snaresbrook Crown Court, located in the London Borough of Redbridge in east London, is one of the busiest Crown Courts in England and Wales. It handles serious criminal cases — including offences against the person, sexual offences, serious fraud, and other matters too grave to be dealt with by the Magistrates' Court system.

Cases reach the Crown Court either because they are indictable-only offences — those that must by law be tried at Crown Court — or because they are either-way offences where the Crown Prosecution Service or the defendant's legal team has elected Crown Court trial. The appearance at Snaresbrook Crown Court rather than a Magistrates' Court confirms that the allegation is being treated as a serious criminal matter.

The plea hearing on September 15 at 10 am is the next formal milestone. If Poco Lee enters a not-guilty plea, a trial date will be set — typically several months after the plea hearing. If he enters a guilty plea, sentencing would follow at a subsequent hearing. The September 15 proceedings will not resolve the case; they will establish the formal direction it takes next.

The Community Response and the Weeks Ahead

The news has generated significant online discussion in Nigeria and among the Nigerian diaspora in the UK, as public reactions to legal situations involving beloved entertainment figures invariably do. Some responses have been supportive of Poco Lee. Others have engaged with the allegations seriously. Kuti's public statement — measured, factual, and consistent in its insistence on due process — represents the most responsible framing available at this stage.

The coming weeks before September 15 are unlikely to produce much additional official information. UK court cases of this nature are not typically accompanied by police press releases or interim public statements by prosecutors. The court date itself will be the next formal moment at which the public record advances.

What Nigerians who follow this story should hold simultaneously is this: a serious allegation has been made. A man the Nigerian public knows as a performer and public figure is being held on remand in a UK prison. He has a court date. He has not been found guilty of anything. The legal process, as Kuti said, should be allowed to take its course.
