Fully Funded, Fully Transformative: Queen Elizabeth Commonwealth Scholarships (QECS) 2026-2027 Cycle 2
Among the most prestigious and genuinely impactful scholarships available to Nigerian graduates and Commonwealth citizens anywhere in the world, the Queen Elizabeth Commonwealth Scholarships stand in a category of their own. Not because of where you go — but because of why and how you go. Applications for the 2026-2027 Cycle 2 opened on April 9, 2026, and close on June 3, 2026 at 15:00 UTC. That gives you 23 days from today. Here is everything you need to know.
The Organisation Behind the Scholarship: The Association of Commonwealth UniversitiesThe Queen Elizabeth Commonwealth Scholarships are funded through the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan endowment fund and administered by the Association of Commonwealth Universities — the world's first and oldest international university network, founded in 1913, currently comprising more than 400 member universities across over 40 Commonwealth countries. The ACU's purpose is to support excellence and help build a better world through higher education, and the QECS is the most visible expression of that mission.
The scholarship was established in honour of Queen Elizabeth II and carries her name as a symbol of the Commonwealth's shared commitment to education, development, and the peaceful collaboration of nations. It has produced a generation of alumni — now working in government, science, public health, engineering, academia, and civil society across the Commonwealth — who describe the scholarship not as funding, but as the defining experience of their professional lives.
What Makes QECS Different From Every Other ScholarshipBefore the eligibility criteria, the deadlines, and the logistics, you need to understand what makes the QECS philosophically different from the scholarships that flood your inbox every year.
Most international scholarships send you to a high-income country — the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Canada, Germany — and the implicit assumption is that the best education flows from North to South. The QECS flips this model. It sends students from Commonwealth countries to study in other Commonwealth countries, most of which are low or middle-income nations. It is a deliberate investment in South-South and South-North collaboration — a recognition that some of the world's most innovative, contextually relevant, and practically impactful work in climate science, engineering, public health, and computing is happening not in Oxford or MIT, but in Stellenbosch, Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka, Fiji, and Mauritius.
The programme is not designed to produce scholars who stay abroad. It is designed to produce change-makers who go home. Every component of the application process — particularly the three compulsory statements — is built around the question of what you will do with your knowledge after you return. This is not a scholarship for people who want to escape Nigeria. It is a scholarship for people who want to transform it.
The Application Cycle Structure: How Cycle 2 Fits InThere are two annual opportunities to apply for QECS. Cycle 1 opens in November or December each year. Cycle 2 opens in March or April. For the 2026-2027 academic year, Cycle 2 opened on April 9, 2026 and closes on June 3, 2026 at 15:00 UTC.
Applicants study commencing around January or February 2027. Selection results are typically announced in October 2026, giving successful candidates sufficient time to prepare for their international move, arrange visas, and complete pre-departure requirements.
You only need to submit one application per scholarship cycle, but you are welcome to apply more than once — to different universities or countries — if your interests align with multiple participating institutions. You are also permitted to apply in both Cycle 1 and Cycle 2 if a different set of courses and countries is available in each.
The Participating Universities and Courses for Cycle 2: 2026-2027For the 2026-2027 Cycle 2, the participating universities are in South Africa and Papua New Guinea. The course offerings in this cycle are deliberately focused on technology, engineering, climate, and computing — disciplines that sit at the intersection of global development priorities and Nigeria's most urgent national needs.
In Papua New Guinea, the Papua New Guinea University of Technology is participating with programmes covering Climate Change and Renewable Energy Access, Applied Physics, Agriculture, Mechanical Engineering, and Communication Engineering. These are practical, solutions-focused disciplines directly relevant to the infrastructure, energy, and food security challenges facing Nigeria and the wider developing world.
In South Africa, Stellenbosch University is offering a Master's in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence — one of the most sought-after disciplines in the global job market. This programme requires a strong background in mathematics, computer science, or engineering, and applicants must be comfortable with programming and core mathematical concepts. Tshwane University of Technology is offering a Master of Computing in Computer Science. For Tshwane University specifically, there is a critical additional step — you must apply to the university separately and include your application ID in your QECS scholarship form. Failing to include this ID will render your QECS application invalid.
Applicants who choose South Africa as their study destination face one additional requirement: the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluation. SAQA evaluates overseas academic qualifications against the South African National Qualifications Framework to confirm their equivalence. This process takes time and costs money — the ACU recommends starting this process early, well before the June 3 deadline, to avoid complications.
Who Is Eligible: The Non-Negotiable RequirementsThe QECS eligibility criteria are clear and must all be met without exception.
You must be a citizen — or hold refugee status — in a Commonwealth country. Nigeria is a Commonwealth member, and Nigerian citizens are fully eligible. The programme covers Commonwealth countries across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Americas, the Pacific, and Europe. The full list of eligible African Commonwealth countries includes Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Botswana, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Namibia, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Cameroon, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mauritius, Mozambique, Rwanda, Seychelles, and more.
You must have completed your undergraduate degree at the time of application. Final-year students are not eligible — your undergraduate studies must be finished and your degree awarded before you apply. There are no exceptions to this requirement.
You must have achieved a minimum of a 2:1 degree classification at undergraduate level, or the international equivalent. For Nigerian graduates, this means a Second Class Upper Division. Graduates with First Class degrees are naturally competitive.
You must apply to study in a country other than your home country. A Nigerian citizen cannot use a QECS scholarship to study in Nigeria. The programme's entire design is built around international mobility, cultural exchange, and cross-border academic collaboration.
There is no upper age limit for QECS. This is a significant and inclusive feature — it means career professionals, mid-level practitioners, and experienced Nigerians who have been working for years but want to advance to a Master's degree are fully welcome to apply.
You must intend to pursue a two-year Master's degree programme. The QECS does not fund one-year Master's programmes, PhDs, undergraduate studies, or professional diplomas.
You must be self-funded and not holding a full scholarship from another source. The QECS is designed for students who cannot access alternative full funding.
The Full Funding Package: What the Scholarship CoversThe QECS is a fully funded scholarship covering all the major financial barriers to international postgraduate study. Understanding exactly what is covered — and what is not — is essential for financial planning.
The scholarship pays your tuition fees in full, directly to the host university. You will not pay anything to enrol, register, or attend your programme.
You receive a living allowance — a monthly stipend — for the full duration of your two-year award. This stipend is designed to cover daily living expenses, food, local transportation, communication costs, and general upkeep during your studies. While accommodation is not directly provided or arranged by the ACU, the stipend is sized to help you secure private accommodation in your host country.
Your return economy flights between Nigeria and your host country are fully covered — both the outbound journey when you begin your studies and the return journey when you complete them.
You receive a one-off arrival allowance upon landing in your host country to help cover immediate settlement costs — visa fees paid locally, initial accommodation deposits, SIM cards, and other costs incurred in the first days of arrival.
A research support grant is also available but is not automatic. It is available on request and subject to approval by the ACU, and is typically provided to scholars who require specific materials, fieldwork travel, or specialised equipment for their research.
One important clarification: the scholarship cannot be combined with a full scholarship from another source. However, it can be combined with partial financial support from other sources in some circumstances.
The Application Form: The Three Statements That Determine EverythingThe QECS application is built around three compulsory written statements that are, by almost universal consensus among successful applicants and ACU reviewers, the most important determinant of selection. Your grades open the door. Your statements decide whether you walk through it.
The first statement is your Study Plan. In 200 to 400 words, you explain why you chose this specific course at this specific university, how it connects to your academic background, and what you intend to learn from it in terms of skills, knowledge, and professional development. This statement should be specific and strategic — not generic declarations of interest in "broadening your horizons" but a concrete, evidence-based explanation of why this programme is the right next step for your specific trajectory.
The second statement is your Development Impact and Post-Study Outreach Plan. In 300 to 500 words, this is the most important statement in the entire application. You must identify a real, specific problem affecting your home community or Nigeria as a whole, explain how your Master's studies will equip you with knowledge and skills to contribute to solving it, and articulate a concrete plan for how you will engage with communities, institutions, or sectors after your studies. The ACU is not looking for vague commitments to "give back." It is looking for candidates who have thought deeply about what problem they are uniquely positioned to address, why this education specifically equips them to do so, and what they will specifically do upon return. Strong candidates connect their development impact statement to nationally or globally recognised development frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals.
The third statement is your Networking and Community Building Statement. Here you describe your experience building and sustaining professional or academic relationships, and articulate how you plan to actively build your network during your studies at the host university. The ACU values scholars who will enrich the programme's international community, contribute to their cohort, and maintain meaningful connections with fellow scholars and alumni after graduation.
Beyond the statements, you must upload your academic transcript, your undergraduate degree certificate, and provide the contact details for two academic or professional referees who will submit letters of support. Referees should know you well and be able to speak specifically to your academic capacity, your community commitment, and your leadership potential.
How to Apply: Step by StepThe application is submitted through the official ACU portal. The process follows these steps.
Visit the official QECS page at acu.ac.uk and review the list of participating universities and available courses for Cycle 2. Identify the programme that best aligns with your academic background, career goals, and development impact vision. Read the full application guidance documents and FAQs published on the ACU website before beginning your application — the guidance is detailed and specific, and ignoring it is one of the most common reasons applications are rejected.
Create a free myACU account if you do not already have one. Once your account is created, you can log in and access the QECS application form for your chosen university and course.
If your chosen university is Tshwane University of Technology in South Africa, submit a separate university admission application directly to Tshwane before completing your QECS form. Obtain your application ID from Tshwane and include it in the designated field of your QECS application. This step is mandatory and non-negotiable.
If your chosen host country is South Africa, begin the SAQA evaluation process for your Nigerian academic qualifications as early as possible. SAQA evaluations take time and the fee is not covered by the ACU.
Complete the full application form, upload all required documents, write your three statements with care and specificity, and ensure your referees are aware of the deadline and have submitted their letters before June 3.
Submit your application before June 3, 2026 at 15:00 UTC. The ACU does not accept late applications under any circumstances and does not grant extensions.
What Happens After You ApplyOnce the application window closes on June 3, 2026, the selection process begins. Applications are reviewed by both the ACU and the participating host universities, with selection based on academic merit, the quality of the three written statements, the strength of references, and an overall assessment of the candidate's potential to contribute to their community and to the Commonwealth network.
Results for Cycle 2 are typically announced around October 2026. Successful scholars are then given detailed pre-departure guidance, visa assistance information, and are connected with the QECS Alumni Network — a global community of former scholars who provide mentorship, professional connections, and ongoing support throughout the scholarship period and beyond.
Studies commence around January or February 2027.
The QECS Experience: What Scholars SayThe testimony of a QECS alumnus from the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka captures what the programme means beyond the funding: "My research in cellular and molecular medicine wouldn't have been possible without the QECS. But more than the research, it was the people — the scholars, the faculty, the community — that changed how I see the world and my own country's challenges."
This is the QECS difference. It is not primarily a financial award. It is a leadership and development fellowship that happens to also pay your tuition, your rent, and your flight home.
Why Nigerian Graduates Should ApplyNigeria is home to one of the Commonwealth's largest, youngest, and most intellectually ambitious graduate populations. The challenges Nigeria faces — in energy access, climate resilience, digital infrastructure, food security, public health, and governance — are exactly the challenges that the QECS is designed to address through the training of committed, globally exposed, academically excellent change-makers.
A Nigerian who completes a Master's in Machine Learning and AI at Stellenbosch and returns with deep knowledge of how AI systems are being built and deployed in the African context is more valuable to Nigeria than a Nigerian who completes a generic online course. A Nigerian who studies Climate Change and Renewable Energy at the Papua New Guinea University of Technology and returns having seen how a Pacific island nation is confronting existential climate risk is better equipped to contribute to Nigeria's own energy transition. That is exactly what the QECS is built to produce.
The deadline is June 3, 2026. The application is free. The funding is complete. The purpose is real.
