Abstract

This study investigates the impact of Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) schemes on poverty alleviation in Kaugama Local Government Area (LGA), Jigawa State. The primary aim of the study was to assess the effects of CCT on key dimensions of poverty, specifically focusing on education, health, household well-being, and psycho-social well-being. The research adopted a quantitative methodology, employing a survey design and logistic regression analysis to evaluate the relationship between participation in the CCT program and improvements in the aforementioned areas. A Purposive/Judgmental Sampling technique was used to select 518 households, with 506 completed questionnaires analyzed. The theoretical framework of the study draws on Human Capital Theory, Social Protection Theory, and Behavioral Economics Theory, which emphasize the role of education, financial support, and incentives in reducing poverty. The findings revealed a significant positive impact of CCTs on school enrollment, health outcomes, household financial stability, and mental health, aligning with previous research on CCT schemes globally. However, the study also identified limitations, including structural barriers that hinder full access to benefits. In conclusion, the study asserts that CCT schemes can significantly alleviate poverty in Kaugama LGA, but further efforts are required to address infrastructure and socio-cultural barriers. The study recommends improving local infrastructure, targeting vulnerable populations, and enhancing community sensitization to maximize the effectiveness of CCT programs in rural areas.
