Abstract

The study investigated the impact of micro-industrial cluster apprenticeships on the socio-economic resilience of non-graduate youths in Abia State, Nigeria. The specific aim was to evaluate how localized technical training paths translate into tangible livelihood security parameters. Geographically scoped to four Local Government Areas (Aba North, Aba South, Osisioma Ngwa, and Umuahia North), the study adopted a quantitative survey research design. Relying on primary data from 400 respondents, the methodology utilized a non-probability sampling combination of purposive and snowball techniques. The theoretical framework of the study was anchored on the Human Capital Theory, Core-Periphery Theory, Theory of Change, and Psychological Empowerment Theory. To analyze the non-parametric parameters, Categorical Regression with Optimal Scaling (CATREG) via SPSS 30 was implemented. The findings of the study revealed that Leatherware and Footwear Production apprenticeships exert the largest positive impact on alternative asset acquisition (β = 0.412, F = 18.450, p = 0.000). Industrial Garment and Fashion Design training significantly increases daily personal profit margins (β = 0.285, F = 11.230, p = 0.002), while Metal Fabrication skills significantly upgrade household medical expense coverage (β = 0.198, F = 6.840, p = 0.015). Conversely, Carpentry and Upholstery apprenticeships hold a non-significant relationship with long-term business expansion capacity (β = 0.104, F = 2.110, p = 0.114). The study concluded that cluster-based training functions as an organic economic safety net, but structural business expansion remains restricted. Therefore, the study recommended that the government establish a cluster-based asset capitalization scheme and subsidize modernized woodworking equipment.
